CONTEXT

During our second year in Game Design in ESMA, we had one month to create an exploration game in small teams.

PRODUCTION

During Nangapa’s production, I was in charge of the Game Design, Level Design and the narration.

Game Design

The idea of having a roomba as a protagonist came quickly in our mind. However, this idea wasn’t enough to bring fun in Nangapa; we needed a challenge, a way to twist this mechanic and making it more interesting.

The different batteries as bonuses came at this moment: it served as tiny boosts for the players, helping them in their island-cleaning quest!

Level design

Nangapa was the first project where I was in charge of a 3D level creation. I needed to be careful and make sure the level was interesting enough, but also the players won’t get lost. I had to work on the different hotspots and interest points that the players would be able to explore and use in their orientation.

It was the main difficulty in Nangapa’s production: making these areas different and recognizable. I brought different challenges in these areas to make them unique thanks to the batteries, making these areas unique.

Narration

We didn’t wanted Nangapa’s narration to take up too much space. We wanted something simple, almost invisible.

Since the players control a roomba cleaning an island, the player won’t meet any humans. It’s because humanity was living on this island before, but doesn’t live there anymore.

We didn’t have much time to put more clues about humanity’s past life on the island, but we had in mind to create a village ruins to emphasize this tiny story.

CONCLUSION

Nangapa was a short-term project, almost like a jam. We wanted the game’s experience to be satisfying. It could be better, of course, but working on this was a great experimentation and way of getting my bearings with 3D level design.
